The Energy Metabolism and Nutrition Group (GMEIN) at the University of the Balearic Islands is a well-established research group founded in 2002. It is affiliated with the Health Research Institute of the Balearic Islands (IdISBa), the University Institute for Health Sciences Research (IUNICS), and the CIBER for Obesity and Nutrition Physiopathology (CIBERobn, CB06/03/0043). Led by Dr. Isabel Lladó Sampol, the team has extensive experience studying sexual dimorphism and estrogenic signaling in energy metabolism, focusing on their alterations in conditions such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, aging, and mitochondrial diseases like ataxia.
The group’s intense research activity has earned funding from multiple competitive calls at the national, regional, and international levels, as well as support through scholarships and research contracts. As a result, the team has published numerous articles in high-ranking international journals and participated widely in national and international conferences. The group’s strong commitment to training researchers is also notable, as members supervise doctoral theses, master’s theses, and undergraduate projects.
The team has broad experience using animal models to study different physiological and pathological conditions (such as fasting, obesity, pregnancy, diabetes, ovariectomy, hormone replacement, and ataxia) and conducting in vitro studies with primary cell cultures and various cell lines, including adipocytes, endothelial cells, hepatocytes, cardiomyocytes, myocytes, and fibroblasts. The group is skilled in a range of biochemical and molecular biology techniques, including spectrophotometry, chromatography, Real-Time PCR, Western Blot, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, proteomics, and Seahorse cell metabolism analysis.
Lastly, the team collaborates actively with other national and international research groups, enabling a multidisciplinary approach to their studies.
